Results - Grand FinalFirst XI Thomson 227 Alexander Thomson 167 Lucas Benci 7/73 Andrew Williams 45 Nathan Saunders 35 The Vikings reached the Grand final with little pressure on them as Thomson entered the match as hot favourites on the back of their unbeaten run throughout the year. All the pressure would be on Thomson leaving the Vikings to focus on putting up as a good as performance as possible. Thomson won the toss and elected to bat. Both Aaron Sarah and Lucas Benci started well with the ball with Benci claiming the early breakthrough to have the tigers 1/8. Thomson however then steadied with multiple partnerships. When the score progressed to 3/130 it seemed we may be chasing a score in excess of 280. The Vikings rallied on the back of a 7 wicket haul from Lucas Benci. Benci was well supported by Nathan Saunders who tied up one end with a 27 over spell taking 1/44. 12th man Matt “Jaffa” Jeffreys got a call up to field when Watto’s hammy tightened up. Jaffa took 2 catches to contribute to the teams effort. Thomson were dismissed for 227. A good score but about par for this deck and outfield. Half the job was done and only one days play would determine if the Vikings would be premiers. The Viking openers of Williams (45) and Saunders (35) provided the best possible start. They contributed 80 runs for the opening stand. Thomson bowlers were under some pressure to stop the flow of runs. When Williams received a dubious LBW momentum was to swing back to Thomson. The Viking middle order was not able to build on the start and we soon found ourselves under a lot of pressure. Dean Watson looked solid at 3 but another dodgy decision when his innings was just getting underway saw him back in shed for 11. Luke Davidson (12) provided some resistance before falling to a ball that did not bounce as much as expected. As much as the skipper Arnott wanted to make runs it was not to be and the same could be said for gun bat Benci and form batter, Cranny. Simon Fragiotta showed experience beyond his years with a well made 23. David Kiss worked hard and Speedy provided some lusty hits from the tail. The Viikings were dismissed for 167. Shattered. That word somes up the feelings of all players and supporters. The team however will look back on this season and be extremely proud of their performances that culminated in a Grand Final appearance where the game was not over until late on the final day. Sean Arnott can be very proud of his first season at the club with all four sides playing finals and the Firsts nearly going all the way. Cant wait for next season to come around. !!! Go the Vikings. Grand final Scorecard below : Thomson
Results - Preliminary FinalFirst XI Alexander Thomson 179 Guild 129 Andrew Williams 43 Cameron Forbes 3/17 Jason Cranny 28 Aaron Sarah 3/42 After crushing the highly fancied St Peters last week the Vikings took on Guild in a match where the stakes could not be a higher – a spot in the Grand Final. AT won the toss and had no hesitation in batting. Williams and Saunders again got the team of to a good start with an opening stand of 41. Andrew Williams was batting well and the score progressed to 1/65 before the loss of Williams saw the Vikings stumble loosing 4/25. The Vikings settled and with some good support from the middle / lower order we were able to post a very competitive score of 179. Jason Cranny (28) continued his good form with the bat and found support in young Simon Fragiotta (21). Cameron Forbes batted well by chipping the ball around and taking as many singles as possible. The Vikings had done well to complete part 1 of the job and now needed to finish the job on the Sunday with the ball. Skipper Arnott could not have hoped for a better start on day 2. Aaron Sarah claimed the first wicket that of key Guild batter – Larkins. Watson had to make good ground to take the catch and this first wicket triggered a collapse by the guild top order. Cameron Forbes bowled great lines and was able to collect the next three wickets to have the Guild team reeling at 4/20. The pressure was never released as all bowlers maintained great pressure on the guild bats. At 7/75 the game was effectively over. Some resistance saw them stagger to 129 all out which was well short of the target. Another big win for the First XI. This team has great depth in their batting and bowling. A grand Final against Thomson awaits and a return of gun player Benci, who was unavailable for the preliminary final, will give the team a great boost. Everyone should try to get to West Kardinia this weekend to give support to the boys as they take on a team who have not lost a game. With the form the Vikings take into this game they are a huge chance to do something very special and something they will remember for a very long time.
Results - Semi Finals Week 1First XI Alexander Thomson 158 St Peters 93 Jason Cranny 54 Lucas Benci 5/36 Luke Davidson 25 Aaron Sarah 3/15 The Vikings finished 5th and played the St Peters who finished in second and had not lost a game for a long time. The Vikings lost there recent match vs the saints however the feeling after that game was that we could do a lot better and St Peters were not beyond our reach. The Vikings won the toss and elected to bat. Both Williams and Saunders provided a steady start with both reaching double figures. The wicket of Williams saw the Vikings stumble. Illingworth bowled a terrific opening spell removing the top 3 Vikings batters. We were 5/59 and a score of 150 looked beyond us however a partnership between Fragiotta and Davidson saw the Vikings innings recover. Jake Cranny was the mainstay of the innings and was rewarded with a terrific half century. Forbes provided Cranny with some support late in the innings and the Vikings were eventually dismissed for 158. Not a huge score but a score in this range can be tough to chase in finals. With 11 overs to bowl to complete day 1 the St Peters batters had a tough period to deal with. Benci and sarah bowled some terrific overs and speedy was rewarded with the big wicket of Nelson. Benci picked up one and the Saints were then on the back foot at 2/5. With 4 overs left for the day the ball was thrown to Nipper who took the prized wicket of Illingworth who was stumped by Kiss. Another wicket to Nipper had the saints teetering at 4/12 at the end of the day. Nipper had 2 overs for 2/0. All momentum was with the Vikings and the players were keen to ram home their advantage the next day. Day 2 saw Sarah and Benci strike early. The saints could not cope with Viking bowlers and collapsed to 7/32. There was no coming back from there. The saints fought hard with an eigth wicket partnership 42 giving some small hope of a miracle result. This all changed when Nipper took a very sharp chance in the gully of Benci. It was all over shortl after with the Vikings dismissing St Peters for 93. A great team effort with all bowlers bowling well. Vikings are primed to take on Guild this week for a place in the Grand Final. We have the team and the belief to make it to the GF and the whole club will be right behind them this weekend. Seconds Waurn Ponds 198 Alexander Thomson 178 Matt Jeffries 5/53 Scott Trewin 43 Dean Thornburgh 3/44 Matthew Jeffries 28 The Vikings finished finished 4th and played Waurn Ponds who finished 3rd in the first Semi final. Waurn Ponds won the toos and elected to bat. Two early wickets to Jaffa had the Ponds 2/15 however it was tough work after that for the Viking bowlers. Waurn Ponds posted a good total of 198 with Jaffa taking a bag of wickets giving him 16 wickets from his last 4 innings. Dean Thornburgh provided good support collecting 3 scalps. The Vikings would start their innings very well progressing to 1/87 with Dorge and Trewin (43) looking good. The loss of welsh was part of a horror stretch for the Vikings who lost 4/4 with the score 5/91. The game was set for a close finish. Richo and Jaffa came together and things started to improve. Matt Jeffries did not hold back with bat and it looked like he would get the Vikings the win of his own bat. He was dismissed for 28 and from there we stumbled and were eventually dismissed 20 runs short. A disappointing finish for the seconds however they had a terrific year and will be keen to avenge this result next year. Thirds Murgheboluc 9/185 Alexander Thomson 153 Josh Lyons 5/43 Brent O’Donnell 47 Jay Dunstan 2/27 The thirds finished 5th and had to get over the 2nd placed Murgheboluc team. Murgheboluc elected to bat. An early wicket to Lyons was a good start however the frogs batters would work hard and build regular partnerships. A great second spell from Lyons saw the frogs loose 4/8 in the middle part of the innings. From 7/140 the Frogs shut shop and worked hard to ensure they batted out all the overs allocated to them finishing on 9/185. Josh Lyons again bowled well and took another bag of 5 wickets. Jay Dunstan chimed in with two wickets to provide support. At 3/96 and both Donny and Bill looking good it looked like we may get the total we needed. As can happen one wicket led to another and we lost 4/18 turning the game back in the Frogs favour. Trav and Dunstan did their best in the lower order however we would be dismissed 33 runs short of the target. Like the seconds this loss will hurt as they had chances to win in a seesawing game. The team had a great year and all credit to the skipper Wight for taking his team to the Finals. Fourths Alexander Thomson 82 Murgheboluc 1/87 Pierce Johnson 35* With the fouths playing finals the club had all great represented in the finals. The Vikings struggled after xmas however a strong start to the year ensured they played finals. We faced off against the top team, Murgheboluc after we finished in sixth place. Things went from bad to worse during the Vikings innings. Only one batter would reach double figures. Pierce Johnson again showed he has a great eye and is difficult to dismiss. He led from the front making 35*. The Frogs took no risks and batted very steady for an attacking side. This ensured there would be no shock result and they easily reached the total only loosing one wicket (Run Out by PJ). Disappointing result however it reflected how the team had performed over the last 6 weeks.
Results Round 13 v ThomsonFirsts (5th on the ladder) Thomson 192 Alexander Thomson 8/120 Nathan Saunders 4/35 Nathan Saunders 23 Cameron Forbes 3/52 Simon Fragiotta 20* Thomson won the toss and elected to bat. Both opening bowlers struck early to have Thomson 2/13. Thomson then recovered on the back of some good partnerships to be 3/143. The introduction of spin triggered a collapse with Nipper taking 4 quick wickets. Thomson was dismissed in the 62nd over for 192 with Saunders, Forbes and Sarah all bowling well. The Vikings had to bat late in the day on day 1 however it did not stop the Vikings getting of to a good start. Nathan Saunders and Andrew Williams played there shots before Nipper was dismissed for a quick fire 23. Williams soon followed and the Vikings needed to steady to get to stumps without loosing another wicket. Watson and Arnott did a great job getting the Vikings to a strong position of 2/76 with one ball left in the day. Unfortunately Watto was dismissed on the last ball of the day. Day 2 and the rain arrived. With wickets falling at regular intervals the Vikings were satisfied the rain came and play was stopped with the score on 8/120. Best of the batters was Saunders, Fragiotta, Arnott, Watson and Williams. Signs are there that if the team clicks they will be very competitive in the finals. Bring on St Peters. Seconds (4th) Thomson 262 Alexander Thomson 3/45 Matt Jeffries 4/62 Craig Varker 13 Dean Thornburgh 3/50 Matthew Richardson 11* Thomson won the toss and elected to bat. Thomson showed why they have only lost 1 game for the season compiling a strong total of 262. Jaffa and Froggy were the pick of the bowlers with both having a great year with the ball. All ener
